The Columbia High Bruins boys soccer (6-1 league, 8-2 overall) team had a light schedule last week and made quick work of Stevenson in a 13-2 win.
Leading up to the game, Coach Gio Magaña-Rivera asked the players “focus on their attack through finishing [shooting], set pieces, crossing, and plays designed to get to the goal quicker.”
The Bruin boys did so, with goals coming from Damian Sanchez, Uli Huerta, Luke Miller, Isaac Reynoso, and Matt Miller en route to the 11-goal win.
“I believe the team needs to stay focused for the entire 80 minutes of the game,” Magana-Rivera said. “For most of the game, we were good on defense and allowed no shots on goal.
“But, then, we let our guard down and Stevenson had two breakaways [goals] which they took advantage of.”
Magaña-Rivera said he hoped the Stevenson game (the Bulldogs are 2-6 league, 3-6 overall) was a learning experience for the defense, especially with rival Seton Catholic scheduled to play in White Salmon on April 23. That game is for first place in the Trico League standings. Seton Catholic is 8-0 in league, 8-2-1 overall).
“I am excited for the boys as we head into a game against a top team like Seton Catholic,” Magana-Rivera said. “They are the only team who have shut us out this season and we hope that won’t be the case when they come to our home Tuesday night and have the community behind us supporting us like they have all season.
“I’ve told the boys that I have felt like we haven’t had an away game all season because looking at those stands, all I see are Bruins’ supporters loud and proud. Our families and community have been there every single game, rain, or shine, one hour or four hours away.”
CHS entered the week ranked ninth in the state WIAA Class 1A rankings and have won four straight entering the 6 p.m. match-up with Seton Catholic.
