HOOD RIVER — Hood River Valley’s boys varsity soccer team showed perseverance in its match against OSAA Class 5A Centennial High School on Oct. 13, when they lost 2-1.
The game was a riveting one, with Hood River and Centennial competing for control throughout. Both teams struggled with maintaining possession of the ball, especially in the offensive third of the field, but Centennial had more shots on the goal.
Ten minutes into the first half, Centennial’s Damian Anderson headed the ball into the goal past Hood River goalkeeper Martin Basurto. HRV became more aggressive in its approach, forcing Centennial to go on the defensive. The ball repeatedly found the gloves of Centennial goalkeeper Angel Hurtado; Centennial (6-4-1, ranked sixth in 5A) countered with a handful of shots that Basurto was forced to block with diving saves.
Centennial managed a second goal just one and a half minutes away from halftime. Midway through the second half, Hood River’s Anthony Hernandez attempted a shot on goal from 25 yards away that left the Centennial goalkeeper on the ground. Freshman Josemaria Baeza took advantage to score off the rebound for Hood River’s only goal.
Hood River head Coach Alvaro Lara said: “It’s one of those games that we really want pre-playoffs that kind of get us ready. You just got to go back, watch film, look at some of the mistakes we made, (and) see what we can do to fine tune them.”
He said HRV’s players should be proud of “the way that they fought through the last minute.”
HRV (5-5-1) was ranked 11th in Class 5A (as of Oct. 17) and has three away games upcoming: at Milwaukie on Oct. 20; at Putnam on Oct. 22; and at St. Helens on Oct. 27. The team will return home on Oct. 29 to compete against Sandy in its final regular season game.
Trout Lake wins fourth straight
Trout Lake/Horizon Christian (6-3-2) won its fourth straight Class 2A/1A boys soccer match Oct. 15, 4-2, vs. Damascus Christian. The Mustangs are in fourth place in Special District 1 with three district matches remaining. John Tu, Charlie Haynie, Richie Morris, Dylan Deiders, Levi Cullen, and Jonathan Orellano scored goals in a 6-1, Oct. 13 Mustang non-league road win over The Dalles’ JVII team.
