The No. 7 ranked Hood River Valley High Eagles boys soccer team had the No. 1-ranked offense (4.5 goals per game average); they were No. 1 in the Intermountain Conference (8-0-2); they were No. 1 in the hearts of their fans; and they had those fans behind them with home-field advantage in the playoffs.

Pressed into action due to an injured right throwing thumb to senior Dominique Seufalemua, The Dalles sophomore Oscar Fernandez nearly led the Riverhawks to a thrilling comeback in a 27-20 loss to Woodburn on Homecoming night Friday at Sid White Field. Fernandez threw two touchdown passes and added a rushing score, but his seven interceptions, including the eventual game-deciding pick with less than a minute left in regulation ,sealed the team’s fate.
For its first game of the season, the HRV football team couldn’t have asked for much more.
