The aromas of spicy, sugary and fruit-filled pies, and people who enjoyed eating them, filled Arome Oct. 4 for the first ever First Friday pie contest.
To the editor: Jesus was a Jew. The word “Christian” is used twice in the New Testament, never by Jesus. Are Jews being persecuted? Only those who claim to be Jews and disobey God’s commands. But those who obey the laws are governed by God alone, and cannot be persecuted by anyone.
Some years ago, Pam Regentin and I were the last two bakers standing in Shortt Supply’s first pie-baking contest. We stood side by side, chatting nervously as the judges made their decision for first place. We talked about our kids and baking. We didn’t talk about the $1,000 first prize, but I’m sure we were both already thinking about how we’d spend it.
Mt. Hood specialty cake designer, Pam Regentin, owner of Fleur Cakes, has made national news, following another Oregon business, “Sweet Cakes” of Gresham, in deciding against providing a wedding cake to a same sex couple. The incident occurred this week when Katie Pugh, a naturopathic physician contacted Regentin to arrange for a wedding cake for an upcoming ceremony in Hood River. Pugh was communicating by phone and then follow-up email when she used the word “she,” referring to her partner, Erin Hansen. The couple is from Portland.
