Another busy weekend yielded some good performances for the HRV varsity wrestling team as they traveled to Madras to face many of their Special District 4 rivals at a tournament. Originally, the Eagles were going to travel to Stevenson for an invitational, but that was canceled.
The HRV varsity and girls wrestling team were able to fit in some more matches late last week before the next round of winter storms crippled Oregon and came away with some notable victories, particularly the girls team, which added another team trophy to its case.
The HRV varsity and girls wrestling teams once again ran into weather issues last weekend, but were able to get a few matches in on Friday, before ducking out of the I-5 corridor and back into the Gorge ahead of Saturday’s storm, cutting short both competitions they were attending.
A now month-long cold snap — colder than usual, even for winter — has made it difficult for the HRV wrestling team to travel to competitions, but the Wreagles were able to squeeze in a couple tournaments last weekend on the road.
HRV wrestling received the same place they did last year at the Special District 4 tournament, but this year, the team will be sending even more athletes to the state championship.
A selection of Hood River’s toughest young wrestlers were in Parkrose last weekend for the 2015 Oregon Wrestling Association Kids State Folkstlye Championships. After the full day of wrestling, eight local boys found themselves on the podium and two were hailed state champions.
Six Hood River Valley High School wrestlers traveled to Cottage Grove High School on Saturday for the annual Oregon womens state wrestling qualifier, and after a full day of wrestling, the Eagles had two champions, five state qualifiers and a new trophy hailing them the top female high school wrestling team in the state for the 2014-15 season.
In their final tournament of the season before this weekend’s 5A Special District 4 Championships (Friday afternoon and all day Saturday in Hood River), Hood River Valley High School varsity wrestlers traveled to Oregon City on Saturday for a nine-team tournament.
Hood River Valley High School wrestlers stayed busy over the winter break, traveling to Reno for the three-day Tournament of Champions before Christmas and to Westview High last week to close out 2014 with the annual Northwest Duals, which pitted 28 teams against one another for two full days of combat.
