On Feb. 17 and 19, Columbia Gorge Sinfonietta presents the tone poem “Finlandia” by Jean Sibelius, the “Pathetique” Symphony by Tchaikovsky, and a special appearance by oboist/author Blair Tindall performing Mozart’s lyrical Oboe Concerto.

THE COLUMBIA GORGE Sinfonietta and the Voci Choir perform Beethoven’s 9th Symphony Friday night at Wy’East Middle School Performing Arts Center in Odell. They perform again today, Sunday, Oct. 25, at 2 p.m. Cost is $20 adults, $10 students.

To the editor: As I go about my day, I find a number of people unaware of a classic music station available on our radios. For the past few years, AllClassical FM from Portland has been broadcasting on two frequencies for The Dalles area; 88.1 which we share with the Hood River area and through the Gorge to Cascade Locks and 96.3 which I myself prefer since it seems to receive the best reception in the downtown area as well as next to the larger stores on the west end. The station also broadcasts on the web from their web site AllClassical.org.

Music has always played a part in stirring up patriotism in the hearts of humankind. Two Columbia Gorge Sinfonietta concerts slated for this weekend will explore that phenomenon through their presentation of “The Heroic Spirit in Music.” On Friday in The Dalles Civic Auditorium and Sunday at Wy’east Middle School performing arts center, the 45 musicians of the Sinfonietta, under the direction of Mark Steighner, will offer an array of musical perspectives that explore this theme.
