Substantial reward increases for the Northern Pikeminnow Sport Reward Fishery make it potentially more profitable for anglers participating in the 2022 season.

Anglers earned nearly $1,162,000 in 2019 through participation in the Northern Pikeminnow Sport Reward Program in 2019. In all, they removed more than 146,000 northern pikeminnow from the Columbia and Snake rivers, which means fewer big fish preying on juvenile endangered salmon.

This year’s Northern Pikeminnow Sport Reward Fishery in the Columbia and Snake rivers opened Wednesday, May 1, and runs through Sept. 30, according to a news release from the Bonneville Power Administration, which funds the program.

It was a good year for pikeminnow anglers in the Columbia and Snake rivers. More than 3,000 people registered for the 2018 Northern Pikeminnow Sport Reward Program. Combined, they spent more than 23,000 angler-days catching and removing 180,271 of the salmon-eating fish, which helps protect young salmon and steelhead from predation.
