It’s been two years since Sebastian Barajas, a four-time OSAA state champion in track and field at Hood River Valley High School, accepted an offer from the University of Oregon to throw for the Ducks track and field team.

When the seniors toss their caps at next month’s graduation ceremonies at Henderson Field, if they find one flung all the way to Indian Creek Road they’ll know whose it is.
EUGENE — Hood River Valley High School senior thrower Sebastian Barajas couldn’t have asked for a better start to his trip to Hayward Field for the 5A track and field state championships.
The Eagles boys track team once again took top honors at the Columbia River Conference championships this year, squeaking out a win by three points over second-place Hermiston. The girls placed first, losing by 44 points to Hermiston and narrowly losing to Pendleton by 3.5 points.
HRV athletes had another good weekend at the track, competing at the Dean Nice Invite in Gresham. The boys team, missing Sebastian Barajas, who was across town competing in the Nike Jesuit Twilight Relays, placed second overall, losing by 20 points to Marist — a team that narrowly beat HRV the previous weekend at the Summit Invite. The girls squad placed fifth of 15 teams.
It’s been a good season so far for the HRV boys and girls track teams and Saturday’s invitational at Sandy High School showed there are no signs of that letting up.
HRV track and field got off to a good start at the District Championships on Wednesday, and was scheduled to wrap up the meet Friday afternoon with the finals in the running events.
