The VFW Post 2471 Auxiliary will host its 28th annual Emergency Responder Appreciation Dinner on Wednesday, March 15, at Mid-Columbia Fire and Rescue’s Station One. The meal served to firefighters/medics and law enforcement officers from three agencies starts at 6 p.m. at the 1400 W. Eighth Street fire station.

For the second time in history, Wasco County has a son serving in the role of sheriff that was once held by his father. On Monday, Lane Magill’s badge was pinned on by his father, John, who held the elected office from 1977 to 1981, as part of a 14-year career in law enforcement. “Today was good because it really hit home that I was following in my father’s footsteps,” said Magill of the experience he called “humbling.”

Wasco County Sheriff Rick Eiesland has given his retirement date—April 30. Speaking to the board of commissioners Wednesday afternoon, Eiesland’s comments were brief. “I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my job and time here in Wasco County,” he said. “It’s time to let the young guys take over. Things have changed so much. It’s overwhelming.”

Wasco County Sheriff Rick Eiesland has ruled the death of an inmate from Hood River last Wednesday at Northern Oregon Regional Corrections Facility in the The Dalles was a suicide.
