The Dalles — Starting Monday Jan.4, The Dalles Public Works crews will be conducting curb-to-curb street sweeping throughout the city. Crews will begin working from the east side of town sweeping on specific routes. The sweep will continue throughout the month.

The Dalles City Council on Monday unanimously approved a permit system for RV parking on city streets, and modified current on-street parking restrictions for RVs and oversized vehicles to allow for vehicles in violation to be impounded and towed 24 hours after the posting of the first $20 citation.

Sometime next spring, The Dalles will be a little more welcoming of recreational vehicles. On Aug. 18, The Dalles Planning Commission voted unanimously to approve a 10-space RV park that will be located on a one-acre site at 3821 W. 10th Street, directly east of Chenoweth Creek.

Peter H. von Oppel is mistaken, the point of free overnight parking at Wal-Mart is not lost on me (Our Readers Write, Nov. 21.) The very idea that Wal-Mart is providing a service to people on the move is laughable. It costs money to travel. It's not as if a bunch of homeless people set up camp while looking for work. What I see are expensive recreational vehicles and second-homes on wheels parking overnight in a tourist-town free of charge.
