Completing his first year as athletic director of The Dalles High School, Matt Morgan gave credit and offered praise to several people who have made his job easier as he transitioned into his demanding role. Wednesday evening at The Dalles Middle School, Morgan, athletic department secretary Alyson Vennewitz, along with coaches Steve Sugg, Bob Thouvenel and Jim Taylor presented plaques to award recipients.

The Dalles girls’ basketball team fell behind by a 13-0 margin in the first half and fought to even the score at 43-all, but a free throw, followed by a missed buzzer-beater gave Hood River Valley a state-play-in clinching 44-43 win Tuesday in Hood River.

The Dalles split a pair of games at the Crescent Valley Tournament last weekend in Corvallis, with the victory coming on Saturday against Ashland by a 42-26 margin.
Eight games into his first year as head coach of The Dalles girls’ basketball team, Brian Stevens has seen some good things and areas that need improvement. Overall, the team is 3-5 with a five-game losing streak, but the players have a desire to improve and put in the extra repetitions necessary to put up a good showing when Columbia River Conference play begins on Jan. 19 against Hermiston.
