Dufur High’s run in the Class 1A Big Sky League girls basketball district playoffs last week was a short one, as the Rangers lost, 63-35, to eventual district champion, Echo High, on Feb. 15.
This year has certainly been unusual for high school athletes in more ways than one. It wasn’t that long ago — five months — that area basketball squads finished their short spring season. Now, another one is starting, as teams began practice Nov. 15.
It has been 15 long years since the Dufur girls basketball program has been relevant in the Big Sky Conference’s upper echelon.
After Saturday’s 50-44 victory over Echo in the district championship game, this young core could be on the top of the heap for many years to come.
DUFUR – Playing against state runner-up Powder Valley, the Dufur Rangers held the Badgers to six second-half field goals in a 39-33 upset basketball win Saturday at the Ranger Dome.
When looking back at how the winter basketball season transpired, The Dalles boys basketball coach Nathan Morris was proud of his team’s accomplishments.
Winning is the best cure-all in sports. The Dalles Riverhawks have won five of their last six games and are riding a streak of four wins in a row after a 51-50 comeback victory over La Grande in boys basketball action Tuesday at Kurtz Gym.
Whether he was alone in a gym perfecting his craft, on the court with his teammates for practice or under the bright lights on game nights, Dakota Murr gave everything he had to The Dalles High School. After capping a regular-season with his third consecutive first-team all-Columbia River Conference award, Murr earned all-state honorable mention recognition for the second year in a row.
While evaluating this past winter, The Dalles boys’ basketball coach Nathan Morris liked the progress his group showed. The Riverhawks also had an increase in all-Columbia River Conference winners, from two to three, as Dakota Murr chalked up his third straight first-team award and teammates Jacob Hernandez and Josh Nisbet secured second-team honors.
In big games, the stars rise to the top. For The Dalles Riverhawks, there weren’t one or two contributors that came up clutch against Hermiston, it was Henry Lee, Dakota Murr, Javier Hernandez, Oscar Fernandez, Josh Nisbet and Jack Bonham who gave this group the necessary spark to pick up a 91-85 triumph Friday in Columbia River Conference hoops action at Kurtz Gym.
Wednesday in La Grande, the 4A Tigers out-rebounded and outplayed the Riverhawks, erasing a 33-32 halftime deficit with a 42-35 second-half run to pick up a 74-68 victory.
