The Columbia High Bruins girls soccer team bounced back from a 2-1 home loss Sept. 24 to King’s Way Christian and won a WIAA Class 1A Trico League home contest 3-2 over the Castle Rock High Rockets on Sept. 27 at Columbia High School in White Salmon.
The HRV boys soccer team began their season last week with a jamboree in Woodburn against two of the top teams in the state. In their first matchup they beat Silverton, who are potential state contenders, 3-0, and in the final match of the day against defending state champions Woodburn it was a scoreless draw.
At first glance, it may seem to be a concern, but head coach Matthew Dallman said at this point in the season, results don’t matter to him, as long as the team is showing progress, which they are.
Putnam senior Makenzie Maier will go down as the thorn in the Eagles’ side this season. The senior forward scored twice in her team’s 3-1 win over HRV at the beginning of the season and twice more Saturday night, in the 5A varsity girls soccer quarterfinals, to seal the win for the No. 1 ranked Kingsmen and knock the Eagles out of the state bracket.
In the most anticlimactic result possible, Hood River Valley High School varsity girls soccer team played to a 0-0 tie at home Tuesday afternoon in the its Columbia River Conference opener against the Pendleton Buckaroos.
Trying not to jinx the team before the season gets started, Hood River Valley High School varsity boys soccer coach Jaime Rivera stopped short of estimating how well he expects the team to do, but says with excitement that this year’s squad has the right ingredients to turn quite a few heads.
