Horizon Christian School’s baseball team kicked off its season in a big way Tuesday with a commanding 11-2 win over the visiting Blue Jays of Portland Lutheran. The high-scoring game at Hood River’s Collins Field got off to a stifled start as both teams worked out first-game jitters, but, for the Hawks at least, once they found an offensive rhythm it turned into a productive day at the ballpark.
The Horizon Christian Varsity basketball team went to state for the fourth time in a row this year. I was luckily enough to be part of the amazing experience.
Religious connotations seem appropriate for a basketball game featuring two Christian schools, an “Ark” and a pre-game prayer circle with both teams holding hands. For good measure, each roster had a Luke, one had a Matthew and there’s no doubt Mark and John were represented somewhere in the sweltering Baker City High gymnasium Saturday night.
BAKER CITY – Top-ranked Horizon Christian School shook off some first-quarter cobwebs Thursday and methodically dismantled third-ranked Imbler 67-47 in the opening round of the Class 1A state basketball tournament at Baker City High School.
Following a near-perfect regular season in which they won 20 straight contests after a season-opening loss to Class 2A Irrigon, the Horizon Christian High Hawks boys basketball team continued its stellar success in league playoffs over the weekend. The No. 1-ranked Hawks (22-1 overall, 9-0 Big Sky West Division), guided by coach Darrin Lingel, captured a fourth consecutive district title with a 74-64 win over the Ione Cardinals Saturday at Hermiston High School.

In their final regular season home game, the Horizon Christian Hawks boys basketball team honored its quartet of seniors prior to Friday’s Big Sky Conference match-up against the Sherman Huskies.
Matt Totaro has enjoyed a successful high school basketball career, which he’s hoping to culminate by helping his team win a 1A state title next month in Baker City. And for the Horizon Christian School senior, things won’t slow down when this season is over.
