After several years of knitting and scrapbooking, Katy Bowman was seeking a new crafting challenge. So she decided to teach herself how to make crochet dolls.

That decision would eventually result in a brief burst of internet fame for Bowman, a clamoring for the dolls that she modeled after her favorite singer, Beyoncé, and best of all, a letter from Beyoncé’s people.

Sure, it was a boilerplate cease and desist letter, but still.

Tears were shed and there were quiet periods of somber reflection Thursday evening as people joining the “We Stand with Orlando” vigil in The Dalles looked at photos of the 49 victims of America’s worst mass shooting. “They were just people who were out celebrating with friends and family, people who worked there,” said organizer Denise Harwood about the victims gunned down June 12 by a lone gunman at Pulse, a gay nightclub in Orlando, Fla. In addition to those who were killed in the tragedy, 53 people were injured and some are still in the hospital due to the severity of their wounds.

A vigil for the victims of the Orlando, Fla., mass shooting is set for Thursday, June 16, at 6:30 p.m. in Lewis & Clark Festival Park at the foot of Union Street. Early Sunday, a lone gunman killed 49 people and wounded 53 others at a gay nightclub in Orlando.
