DUFUR – Kristin Whitley knows the legacy of the past and the success of the Dufur Ranger volleyball program has enjoyed in its history. She is not overwhelmed by stepping to the forefront, however, saying it is time to get to work to lead Dufur High School back to 1A prominence.
Through her playing career, Dufur High School graduate Sydney Reed has played under the bright lights, handling pressure with a sense of calm. This past Saturday, Reed donned her Ranger volleyball uniform once again for play in the fourth annual Oregon Athletic Coaches Association all-star volleyball series Saturday at Quinn Coliseum in La Grande.
Over the years, many of the top players in the state have donned the Dufur Ranger colors, earning countless league and state honors, along with league crowns and state championships. Sydney Reed can now add her name to that esteemed group of former Dufur greats.
With a chance to extend their season another week, the Dufur Rangers could not find any continuity or flow in their three-set 1A state playoff loss to Crosshill Christian Saturday in Turner.
The Dufur Rangers were all business against Mitchell-Spray in their senior night match. After celebrating the contributions of veterans Sydney Reed and Emily Grande-DePriest, Dufur came out swinging for 29 kills and 17 aces in a three-set sweep over the Eagle-Loggers by an average margin of 11 points per set.
After losing four consecutive matches in sweep fashion to start the season, the Dufur Rangers turned the tables for their league opener, using the service game to dispatch of Horizon Christian in three games.
