Completing his first year as athletic director of The Dalles High School, Matt Morgan gave credit and offered praise to several people who have made his job easier as he transitioned into his demanding role. Wednesday evening at The Dalles Middle School, Morgan, athletic department secretary Alyson Vennewitz, along with coaches Steve Sugg, Bob Thouvenel and Jim Taylor presented plaques to award recipients.
The 2018 softball season has provided the fans and players with a little bit of everything, whether it was injuries, losing skids and everything else imaginable. That’s why last Friday’s dramatic victory was that much sweeter.

The Dalles softball team were back at work in Hillsboro during spring break and salvaged an opening-day split at the Glencoe Tournament Thursday, with a 6-4 loss to Canby and an 11-4 triumph over Aloha in varsity action at Hillsboro Stadium.
Last season, The Dalles softball team needed eight games to score 43 runs and didn’t earn its first win until April 22. So far this spring, the Riverhawk bats have come alive with 44 runs scored through four games, they are already one win from matching their 2017 total and moved up to No. 5 in the 5A rankings following a 25-3 mercy-ruled dismantling of Redmond in non-league softball action Tuesday at 16th Street Ballpark.
There was a valuable lesson learned from last season. The Dalles softball seniors Emma Weir, Jodi Thomasian and Kathryn Bradford all have the mindset of moving forward and not looking back.
Jodi Thomasian and Paulina Finn were the prominent scoring options for The Dalles girls’ basketball team this season, and coaches from the Columbia River Conference had to devise game plans on how to stop this dynamic duo. Thomasian notched double figures in seven of the Riverhawks’ nine league matchups, while Finn rattled off 10 points or more in five of the seven league matchups she was active for.
