For several years, it has been a tradition for members of the Masonic Lodge in The Dalles to purchase bicycles and then donate them to local schools as an incentive to encourage youngsters to do more reading. Hew Hillis, master of Wasco Masonic Lodge No. 15, said members have engaged in the program since 2014.

For those who love to read and appreciate the value of the written word, The Dalles is the place to be in April. As part of the American Indian Cultural Festival, four Northwest authors who have written books about native cultures will be coming to The Dalles for more than a week of literary activities.

Help is now within much closer reach for immigrants in The Dalles and elsewhere in the Columbia River Gorge. In July, a nonprofit law firm called Immigration Counseling Service (ICS) opened an office in Hood River that serves people throughout the gorge.

To the editor: Last Saturday, the Klindt’s staff had the pleasure of working at the regional Oregon Battle of the Books (OBOB) tournament, hosted again this year by Jim Tindall at the Dalles Middle School. We were amazed by all the hard working young readers who got up early on a Saturday morning to participate and all the wonderful community volunteers who showed up to make this event happen. The community should be proud of these kids and volunteers. And we are lucky to have Jim Tindall serving as librarian for our school district.

North Wasco County School District libraries held a rap rematch between teachers and wordsmiths “Sequential” Seth Hedberg and “Linear” Ben Lin at The Dalles Middle School on May 14.

Recently, the libraries of North Wasco County School District hosted the eighth annual poetry slam. As part of that event high school math teacher Linear Ben Lin competed against middle school history teacher Sequential Seth Hedberg in a no-holds barred Rap-Off. Sadly for both educators, the panel of three judges called it a tie, destroying bragging rights for both men.
