Jake Grossmiller, a legendary rodeo announcer known to generations of rodeo fans throughout the Northwest and particularly at the Fort Dalles Rodeo, died at his home Aug. 19. He was 80.

Bob Walcott, site leader for Hood River Painting, tests color on the wall of the old Tum A Lum Lumber building in the 800 block of E. Second Street, downtown The Dalles. The building will soon house The Dalles Chronicle, which has been conferring with Jake Grossmiller, a representative from The Dalles Mural Society about how to get a new mural in place.

For nearly 30 years, rodeo announcer and local radio personality Jake Grossmiller has kicked off the action at the Spray Rodeo with the words, “...where the pavement ends and the west begins!” This year, in recognition of his decades as the voice of Spray Rodeo, he will be honored as Grand Marshal.
