To the editor: There is a little weed which causes a big problem in eastern Oregon: genetically engineered Creeping Bentgrass, created by agribusiness giants Scotts Miracle-grow and Monsanto for use as turf grass on golf-courses and to be resistant to the use of Round-up weed killer. The big problem is the grass has escaped and can affect non GMO crops and invade natural areas.

Hooved intruders are posing a challenge for Hood River Valley farmers.
When the Wasco County Board of Commissioners signed a letter supporting the sale of the Limmeroth Ranch in the Deschutes River corridor to the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife in October, 2013, there was zero opposition. Well, there is now. Leading the group of unhappy nearby landowners at the June 3 meeting was Dean McAllister, who is also the vice president of the Wasco County Farm Bureau. “The government already owns 54 percent of Oregon,” McAllister said. “Why do they need another 10,000 acres? When is it enough for the state?” The purchase of the Limmeroth Ranch would add to the Lower Deschutes Wildlife Area, which was established in 1983 when the Oregon Wildlife Heritage Foundation donated 2,758 acres. In 1986, the foundation gave another 5,158 acres to the department.
Candidate forum Community members are invited to mark their calendar for Tuesday, Oct. 21 and attend a candidate’s forum sponsored by The Dalles Chamber of Commerce and Wasco County Farm Bureau. The forum begins with a meet-and-greet at 5:30 p.m., political discussion from 6 to 9 p.m. Location is the third floor of Building 2, Columbia Gorge Community College campus. Participants will include candidates from city and county races and information on state ballot issues.
The Wasco County Farm Bureau’s 70th annual pancake feed and Farm City Appreciation Day is set for Thursday, March 6 at 6:30 p.m. at the St. Peter’s Parish Hall, 1111 Cherry Heights Rd. in The Dalles.
