A two-out, walk-off single by Lauren Decker was the perfect cap to the HRV softball team’s (No. 6, 18-10) impressive rally Wednesday, erasing a 2-0 deficit against the La Salle Falcons (No. 11, 17-11) to come back and win 3-2, propelling the Eagles into the quarterfinals of the 5A state tournament.
For the first time since 2014, the HRV softball team (No. 6, 17-10) has made it into the 5A state tournament, qualifying Friday evening after edging the Northwest Oregon Conference’s Milwaukie Mustangs (No. 20, 11-15), 1-0, during a play-in game at the Ballpark at Belmont in Hood River.
The Eagles softball team showed just how good they are Tuesday evening, splitting another doubleheader with No. 3 Pendleton, which gave the Eagles a split in the four-game season series with the Bucks — the first time that has happened since the 2013-14 season — and helped HRV keep their No. 5 5A ranking. HRV lost the first game 7-2, but took the second game 3-2.
With a chance to remain tied atop the Columbia River Conference softball standings with the No. 4 5A-ranked Pendleton Buckaroos, the HRV softball team simply needed to get a win over the struggling Hermiston Bulldogs.
