We are excited to announce artist Bri Murphy, our instructor Jim Pytel and Dean Dylan McManus have been working diligently this week to get the Flex Lab attached to the CGCC Skill Center up and running with all of the technology acquired through the continued support from local private partners.

The Wasco County Cultural Trust Coalition awarded $11,350 in grants to 12 projects on Feb. 8 in a ceremony at The Dalles Art Center. Coalition board member Corliss Marsh said the awards went to projects which fit into the coalition’s three priorities of youth, multiculturalism and service to the entirety of Wasco County.

The local Columbia Gorge STEM Hub won a $50,000 grant after being named a top-eight finalist in a nationwide competition aimed at improving technology access for students. It was the only candidate from Oregon to be named a finalist.

The Dalles is a top-15 finalist nationwide for a grant that could potentially hire two full-time employees to help bring hands-on STEM mentoring and projects to local students. The finalists were selected based on their potential for impact, approach to partnership building, creative engagement strategies and sustainability planning, according to US2020.

Community members have enthusiastically received the Teen Programming and Digital Media Room at The Dalles-Wasco County Library since its opening last June, so much so that funds will now be used to add another technological advancement: a dedicated “makerspace.” The technology lab will be installed in what is now the periodicals’ section on the second floor (the periodicals will be moved to another shelving unit around the corner.)

An April trip to American Samoa by eight Wahtonka Community School students saw them paint a huge mural at an open air high school cafeteria in the island territory. When they touched down in Samoa and saw the 38-foot-by-13-foot canvas, they were a bit daunted, they told The Dalles Kiwanis Club members last week.
