Duane Witter struck out on his own this summer, starting Genesis Septic Solutions.

He did not have much of a choice. Fresh off a stint with Speedy Septic, Witter soon had a customer that needed a septic tank installed. He did the job after acquiring his Oregon Department of Environmental Quality license and bond.

In her freshman year as a softball player, Jodi Thomasian came up to the plate in a pressure situation with a runner at second base. Thomasian will use the relentless drive and passion at Clark Community College in Vancouver, Wash., where she accepted scholarships to play both softball and basketball for the Penguins.

It’s all on the line this week as The Dalles 14U Babe Ruth All-Stars softball team jumps into tournament action in Meridian, Idaho. The team has two games on Thursday. The first game – scheduled for Thursday morning -- is against Kuna, Idaho, and the second game, which will start just after noon, will be against Meridian, the team hosting this year’s tournament.

The Dalles High School softball program is holding its inaugural softball clinic for girls between the ages of 6-18 starting this Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Wahtonka Gym in The Dalles.
