After back-to-back playoff berths, The Dalles baseball team posted more wins overall and in league action, scored 35 more runs and allowed 38 fewer runs, but had a 2-8 record in matchups decided by two runs or less, including an 0-5 mark in league contests.
History was made Friday at Bob Williams Field, as The Dalles pitcher Michael Armstrong tossed a perfect game against Ridgeview. The junior right-hander stymied the Ravens to the tune of six strikeouts on 60 pitches and got some defensive help, as Conner Baughn made all the right calls at catcher, Dominic Smith made two acrobatic plays at third base and Dalles Seufalemua added some scoops at first to keep Ridgeview off the board in a 16-0 mercy-ruled victory.
Tuesday’s one-run loss was frustrating for The Dalles baseball team. The Riverhawks had their 5-0 lead through five and a half innings erased, as Crook County rallied for two runs in the sixth and four in the bottom of the seventh inning, capped by a walk-off, two-out, bases-loaded double in a 6-5 final in Intermountain Conference play from Prineville.
Blessed with good weather at the Pride classic in Arizona, The Dalles baseball team posted a 1-3 record, with the lone win coming in dramatic fashion last Tuesday.
In Thursday’s season-opener, TD got hits from six different players and left seven runners on base, four in scoring position, in what was a 5-1 loss to Putnam.
At the start of last season, The Dalles Riverhawks had a roster of six sophomores, a freshman, a junior and five seniors, who combined to clinch a state play-in spot for the second consecutive year. With the departure of those veterans, there is still a talented core of athletes who played summer ball and got those critical repetitions ahead of 2019.
The Columbia Gorge Hustlers lost the first two games at the Seaside Wood Bat Tournament to Seaside and Hood River by a combined 18-8 spread, but bounced back for a lopsided win against Madison and added a two-game sweep over league opponent, St. Helens, Sunday.
Following a three-game losing streak, where they were outscored by a 27-6 margin, the Columbia Gorge Hustlers got back to their winning ways with a pair of wins in tournament action at North Central High School in Spokane, Wash.
In the second game of Wednesday’s doubleheader, CG Hustler rightfielder Michael Armstrong threw out four runners on the basepaths, three at first base and one at second, and smacked a solo home run in the team’s 9-8 come-from-behind, extra-inning victory at Bob Williams Field in The Dalles. “Mike has really been stepping it up this summer, which is nice to see,” CG Hustlers head coach Steve Sugg said.
