Looking to earn their first Baker City bid since 2004, the Dufur Rangers fell behind by a lopsided 16-3 score through one quarter and trailed 51-30 after three periods in what was a season-ending 66-49 loss to Prairie City (25-2) in tonight’s state second round boys hoops contest Friday in Prairie City.

Cooper Bales and Trey Darden rattled off 11 points each, Daniel Radcliffe added six and the Dufur Rangers jumped out to a 22-10 halftime lead and came away with a 39-31 upset road victory over the No. 11-ranked Joseph Eagles in state sub-round action Tuesday in Joseph.

When a team finishes undefeated and wins a championship, the rest of the state takes notice. The Dufur Rangers won their fourth consecutive state title, 10th overall, and were rewarded with eight players on the 1A All-State squad, including Asa Farrell, Abraham Kilby and Russell Peters, who were selected for first team on both sides of the ball.

HILLSBORO – Early last Tuesday morning on his way to school, Dufur junior Abraham Kilby hit some black ice on the road, skidded to an embankment and flipped three times into a ditch. Medically cleared by doctors, and after getting the final affirmation from head coach Jack Henderson on game day, Kilby dressed down for Saturday’s 1A state semifinal football game against Falls City, and posted five tackles with two sacks, one of those coming on a fourth down play late in the third quarter that kept his team ahead 38-22, in what was a 58-28 victory at Liberty High School in Hillsboro.

The last time Dufur played Falls City in August, it was a 50-12 blowout win at the Dufur Eight-Man Classic as the Rangers expanded on a 20-6 halftime lead with 22 unanswered points. That victory and the second-half dominance had some highlight moments, but heading into Saturday’s semifinal game it could be a double-edged sword.
