But new studies show that these caves are much more than just curious holes in the ice; they serve as valuable climatic and volcanic indicators, and laboratories for astrobiological studies.

Shallow caves and overhangs on the hills west of Mill Creek were fronted by long icicles which were gradually melting over the weekend as warming temperatures began a slow thaw following weeks or freezing temperatures.

National Park Service has added the Paisley Five Mile Point Caves to the United States’ listing of the nation’s most important archaeological and historic sites. Situated near the town of Paisley in south-central Oregon, archaeological excavations at the site has produced evidence of human occupation in Oregon beginning 14,300 years ago, nearly 1,000 years earlier than previously thought.

(AP) — A cave in Oregon’s high desert where archaeologists have found the earliest DNA evidence of human habitation in North America has been added to the National Register of Historic Places. The Paisley Five Mile Point Caves are part of a lava formation outside the community of Paisley in south-central Oregon.
