While many community members are working with the Blue Zones Project to find their purpose and use it in some type of outreach, Klea Espy, 78, is looking to scale back volunteer time. “I’ve finally had to cut some things out because I had something going every single day of the week,” she said. Volunteerism has been a way of life to Epsy, who is still involved in a variety of charitable causes.
Wanting to create exciting and engaging programs that would get teens thinking about their futures, Megan Hoak, teen services coordinator at The Dalles-Wasco County Library, got a national grant for Teen Tech Week, an annual program that will take place in libraries all across the country from March 6-12. The Dalles-Wasco County Library is one of only 20 libraries in the country to receive the $1,000 Youth Adult Library Services Association grant and the only recipient in Oregon.
Art cards, designed by Mid Valley Elementary students, are still available. Stop by the school office to check out the window display — the cards range from holiday to everyday, and can be purchased for $2 a card or $14.95 for a box.
Providence Hospice of the Gorge offers ongoing grief support groups for children and teens. The groups are free and run September through May from 6-7 p.m., every other Thursday at the Riverside Community Church in Hood River. Pizza is provided and, if needed, gas cards are available to cover the expense of travel.
