The No. 3-ranked South Wasco County High Redsides advanced to the OSAA Class 1A boys basketball state tournament following a 62-39 win over the No. 17-ranked Mohawk High Mustangs (19-7) in a second-round playoff game Friday in Maupin.
The Dalles High Riverhawks boys basketball team clinched third place in the six-team Intermountain Conference and advanced to the Class 5A state playoffs for the first time in 11 years.
A spectacular season continues to get better and better for the No. 7-ranked South Wasco County High Redsides boys basketball team. The Redsides won three more Class 1A Big Sky League games last week to remain undefeated at 13-0.

MAUPIN – As a new wave in the 1A landscape, six-man football gave small schools an opportunity to field rosters to compete at a high level. With the leadership of head coach Mike Waine and defensive coordinator Michael Carter, the South Wasco County Redsides finished with a 7-2 record and capped their six-man campaign with a 65-13 blowout win over Eddyville Charter in district crossover playoff contest on Oct. 27 in Madras.
Sweeping changes are coming for 1A football at the start of the 2018 season that will affect the South Wasco County football programs. The Redsides are playing 6-man football as part of an 18-team pilot program, marking the first time since 1959 that Oregon has participated.
A true testament to any championship team is how they respond when their backs are against the wall. Team Pepsi had an opening-round loss and that meant either the players were going to fold up shop or dig deeper into their souls for a resounding response. Thankfully for coach Chad Smith, his squad chose the latter.
