To the editor: What would you do if you had dutifully been taking care of your finances, but suddenly the marketplace you were using got taken over by a hostile organization that denied you access to what you had been carefully caretaking? It would be outrageous, right? Could this happen here? It already has.
Matthew Klebes, director of The Dalles Main Street, is promoting a new campaign that allows community members to show support for small businesses downtown. “Shop Small Saturday” takes place Nov. 28 and Klebes believes it will create an interactive opportunity for customers.

Consumerism is starting to gobble up Thanksgiving Day and it is a sad trend for Americans to follow. Time with family and friends sharing thoughts of gratitude over a feast should not be traded for a holiday bargain.
Most people aren’t paying attention in the middle of summer when stores like Office Depot and Staples go crazy nearly giving away school supplies with their one-cent sales. How can they do it? They’re willing to bet that most customers will grab up the bargains and then add a few full-priced items as well before they get to the checkout.
1. Exercise patience. Instead of buying items when you run out, watch for bargain prices on products you want, and buy them when they are on sale. As you are able, buy enough to last for a couple of weeks or until that product goes on sale again (probably about 12 weeks). Ultimately, the goal is to only buy things when they are sale and never at full price.

The end of the 2013 Legislative Session is now imminent, and as we see too often, those in charge down here have waited until the 11th hour to push the most controversial legislation through. Introduced to the Senate was a tax package marketed to all of us (and you) as a “Grand Bargain.” Sounds nice, right?
