South Wasco County senior and multiple school-record holder Ana Popchock set a new state meet record, school record and personal record in the triple jump with a title-winning distance of 37-feet-4.75 inches to highlight final-day action at the 1A state championships Friday in Eugene.

It is a rarity that an athlete dominates a track and field event the way South Wasco County’s Madisen Davis did this spring. The junior capped a perfect season with nine wins in nine meets as she captured a javelin state championship with a top distance of 127-feet-1 inch, besting her nearest competitor, Adrian’s Shyanne Allaire (114-6), during opening-day action Thursday at the 1A OSAA State Track and Field Championships at Historic Hayward Field in Eugene.

With a triple jump record already in the bag, South Wasco County senior Ana Popchock was in the mood for more. The standout senior shattered an 11-year old 300-meter hurdle record with a personal-record time of 47.42 seconds for first place, breaking the previous mark set by Annie Larlee in 2007 (47.60), by .18 seconds at the Mount Adams Invitational Wednesday in Glenwood, Wash.

Following her record-breaking efforts at the Mustang Invitational last week in Heppner, South Wasco County senior Ana Popchock scored victories in both hurdles events and claimed first place in the triple jump to help the Redsides to 54 points and third place at the Condon-Wheeler Invite Friday in Condon.

Ana Popchock ran her first-place total to six on the season after scoring top honors in three events and teammate Madisen Davis put up a first-place finish in the javelin to lead the South Wasco County girls’ squad to 53 points for fifth place in the 16-team field at Friday’s River’s Edge Meet held in Umatilla.

The South Wasco County girls’ track and field team opened some eyes last Friday at the Riverside Twilight Relays with four wins, four seconds and three thirds, as Ana Popchock, Madisen Davis and Maddie Gragg each posted wins in their events.

MAUPIN – Saddened to see her high school basketball career come to an end following a 37-24 state loss to Hosanna Christian Friday, South Wasco County senior Ana Popchock could only think of the positives from what it meant to be a part of something special.

The South Wasco County volleyball team won 25 matches, claimed two tournaments, lost only one match from Sept. 9 until the state tournament, won a district championship and scored a sixth-place trophy at the 1A state tourney in Redmond.
