Angie Martin, Skamania County Chamber of Commerce Executive director
The Skamania County Chamber of Commerce is actively advocating for the interests of local businesses during the 2025 legislative session, taking a stance on key bills that could impact the economic landscape of the region. Through strategic action, including direct advocacy, member awareness and engagement campaigns, the chamber is ensuring that the voice of the business community is heard.
Among the critical legislative measures the chamber is addressing are:
• Creating a narrow exemption from overtime provisions for certain seasonal workers (chamber supports).
• Raising the state’s minimum wage to $25 an hour and mandating paid time-off (chamber opposes).
• Allowing unemployment insurance for striking workers (chamber opposes).
• Expanding Paid Family Leave (chamber opposes).
• B&O tax increases (chamber opposes).
• Making it easier to approve and register for apprenticeship programs (chamber supports)
Why this matters to businesses
Legislative decisions have direct consequences for businesses — whether through changes in labor laws, taxation, regulatory requirements, or economic incentives. The chamber’s proactive approach helps protect businesses from undue burdens while supporting policies that foster economic growth and sustainability.
“It is critical that the chamber stay informed and engaged in the legislative process on behalf of our local business,” said Angie Martin, executive director. “By monitoring and taking action on proposed legislation, we help ensure a fair and competitive business environment that allows our community to thrive.”
The chamber encourages all business owners to stay informed, participate in advocacy efforts, and voice their concerns on legislation that impacts them. Updates on legislative actions are available through direct communication to chamber members.
