Victor ‘Vic’ Sato passed away peacefully in his home with his family by his side in The Dalles, Ore., on February 5, 2019, at the age of 93.
Victor was born in Dee, Ore., on August 30, 1925. He was one of eight children born to Shiroye and Oriyo Sato. He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Fumiko Sato; daughters, Suzy and Lynne Sato; sister Setsuko Malora, brother Ben Sato; nieces, Terri Togiai, Denise Wong-Stone, and Leslie Yasui; nephews, Roland Kato and Elliott Sakamoto, and grandnieces and grandnephews.
Victor served in the U.S. Army 442nd Infantry Regiment after being interned with his family during WWII. He spent some time in Europe while in the military and after being discharged, he went back home to Dee to help his family with manual labor on the farm. After a few years, he enrolled at Portland Junior College before transferring to Oregon State University to finish his Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, graduating in 1953. Upon graduation, he started his career in mechanical engineering after enrolling in a training program with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
Victor enjoyed his life as a bachelor while starting his engineering career. He went to Hokkaido, Japan on a job assignment where he met Fumiko. They were married in Japan in December of 1969 and came back to the United States to start a family in The Dalles. He continued working and supervised the installation of mechanical equipment at The Dalles, John Day, and Bonneville Dam. He retired in June of 1981. Upon retirement, he enjoyed spending time with his family and enjoyed playing golf at The Dalles Country Club. Â
A private service will be held at a later date.
