Vera M. Parrott passed away Dec. 24, 2009, at the Ray Hickey Hospice House of Vancouver, Wash.
Services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 30, at Anderson’s Tribute Center. Chaplain Steve Lusk, of Hospice of the Gorge and former pastor of Riverside Community Church, will officiate. Graveside rites will follow at Idlewilde Cemetery.
Vera was born to Leota (Murk) and George S. “Phil” Parrott in Hood River, Ore., on Nov. 9, 1919. Her parents moved to Parkdale, where she attended grade school and high school. She graduated from Parkdale High School in 1937, and then attended Pacific University in Forest Grove where she earned her bachelor’s degree in 1941.
Vera’s first teaching position was at Tigard Union High School. Later she taught at Odell High and Wy’east High in the Hood River Valley and at Kiona-Benton City in Washington.
While teaching in Hood River she was deeply involved in various community organizations, business and professional, including the Women’s Club, Hood River County Education Association, Delta Kappa Gamma and Riverside Community Church.
Vera served on numerous state education committees and was elected president of the Oregon Education Association in 1953. She served on the OEA executive committee for three years.
Vera left Wy’east to assume a teaching position with the U.S. Department of Defense in Morocco, teaching girls physical education and science as well as serving as school counselor.
After two years in Nouasseur, Morocco, she transferred to London Central High School in England, where she remained for the next 30 years.
Vera earned her master’s degree from California State University, Humboldt Branch, by attending several summer school sessions. Upon retiring from London Central High, she moved to Vancouver, Wash.
Her parents preceded her in death as did Claude, her one and only brother.
Survivors are her step-nephews and their families: Keith Blau, of Sherwood, Ore., Scott Blau, of Lake Oswego, Ore., and Craig Blau, of Palm Springs, Calif.
Memorials can be made in Vera’s name to Riverside Community Church and sent care of Anderson’s Tribute Center.
