Thomas “Tommy” Frederick Oborne passed away March 16, 2016, at his residence at Providence Down Manor in Hood River, Ore. Tommy was born Sept. 13, 1930, in San Francisco, Calif., to Frank J. and Alma J. Oborne. Tommy grew up in San Mateo, Calif., attended St. Mathews grade school and Junipero Serra High School, where he graduated in 1948. He married his high school sweetheart, Geraldine Fauss, in 1951 and they raised their three children, Francis Jr., Kathleen and Thomas, in Belmont, Calif.
Tommy worked for the U.S. Postal Service in San Mateo for over 30 years and retired as a social service counselor, doing what he loved, helping countless colleagues and co-workers. He moved to the heart of the Sierras, Murphys, Calif., where he met and married his second wife, Margot Lienau, in April 1988.
Tommy was preceded in death by his brother Francis, who was killed in action in Iwo Jima during World War II in March 1945, his father Frank in September 1963, his mother Alma in 1987, his first wife Gerry in 1999, and his second wife Margot in 2010.
He leaves his children, Frank Oborne and wife Joan of San Mateo, Thomas Oborne and wife Robin of San Mateo, Kathleen Ferns and husband Ray of Stevenson, Wash., and stepdaughter Alexa Lienau of Fresno, Calif., grandchildren Justin South and his wife Hellen of Janesville, Wisc., Gabriel South of Belmont, Calif., Mathew Oborne and wife Lisa of Pasadena, Calif., Meghan Perry and husband Robby of Portland, Ore., and Laura Oborne of San Mateo, and two great-grandchildren, Breyden South of Janesville, and Opal Perry of Portland.
Shortly before his passing, Tommy was lucky enough to have once again found love and companionship at Down Manor with his dear friend, Shirley Berry. As a lifelong friend/follower of Bill W., Tommy will be remembered and greatly missed by the countless others in his fellowship, which was always at the heart of his life. A celebration of his life will be held in San Mateo later this spring.
