Funeral homes often submit obituaries as a service to the families they are assisting. However, we will be happy to accept obituaries from family members pending proper verification of the death.
Theola Nadene McKinnis Parson Hughes of Hood River, Ore., passed away Feb. 15, 2017, at Providence Hood River Memorial Hospital en route to a Portland hospital.
Theola was born June 8, 1939, to John William and Veta Elizabeth (Anderson) McKinnis in Cashion, Okla. She was later adopted by Fetus and Evalinn Parson of Lovington, N.M.
Theola graduated in Lovington, and then went to business school before moving to Oregon to be with the McKinnis family.
In 1960, she married Carl Elwood Hughes and in March of 1964 gave birth to their first daughter, Carla Dee Hughes. Two years later, in November of 1966, their next daughter, Brenda Jo Hughes Villegas, was born. They lived on Frankton Road until Carla was about 4, and then moved to Odell.
Shortley after Brenda was born, Theola started attending Tucker Road Baptist Church. She soon started playing piano for Rev. LD Mann and his wife, Barbara. She loved God with all of her heart.
Theola was working at the bowling alley when Carla was born — in those days, it was downtown where Bette’s Place is now. She bowled on a team for several years. She also worked for Janzen’s, Van Horn, Diamond Central and for Evergreen as a CNA.
She was a giver; TBN was her favorite. She also gave to Smile for a Child, the Portland Mission, Union Gospel and numerous other charities.
Theola is survived by her ex-husband, Carl Hughes, daughter, Carla Hughes, daughter and son-in-law Brenda and Jesus Villegas, granddaughters Jolyndee Hughes and Glovia Villegas, great grandson Daniel Montano, sister and brother-in-law Frances and Virgil Thompson, nephew, Dan Thomas and his wife, Cheri and family, baby sister and husband Jackie and Dennis Copeland and family, and brother David Parson and family.
She was predeceased by all of her parents, younger sister Alice Wright, older brother Jack McKinnis and younger brother Doug Witherspoon.
A celebration of life will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 8 at Covenant Christian Church, 455 Frankton Road, Hood River. Theola loved wearing hats, so you are encouraged to wear yours at her celebration of life.
Arrangements are under the direction of Anderson's Tribute Center (Funerals • Receptions • Cremations), 1401 Belmont Ave., Hood River. Visit www. AndersonsTributeCenter.com to leave a note of condolence for the family.
