The Most Rev. Edmond Lee Browning

The Most Rev. Edmond Lee Browning, the 24th Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church (1986-1997), who was unwavering in his commitment to the vision of a more compassionate and inclusive church, died on July 11, 2016, at his home in Dee, Ore. He was 87 years old.

In his acceptance speech after his election as presiding bishop in September 1985 at the Convention Center in Anaheim, Calif., Browning articulated the phrase which captured the imaginations of many in the church of his era to the present day: “I want to be very clear – this church of ours is open to all – there will be no outcasts – the convictions and hopes of all will be honored.”
