SUSAN CATTIN STEVENS
As a young bride, Sue moved across the country to Oregon in 1950 with her college sweetheart, H. Arthur Stevens. Sue and “Steve” (Art) were inseparable until her death on the twelfth day of Christmas in Hood River, Jan. 6, 2018.
She was born in Illinois on Aug. 31, 1927, and graduated with a bachelor of science degree in liberal arts from Northwestern University, where she was an Alpha Phi.
Sue was a homemaker, mother, sister, friend, and grandma who had a youthful enthusiasm, sense of adventure, and love of literature, music, and worldwide travel until memory-loss robbed her of them.
She volunteered in Lake Oswego public schools while the five Stevens children were enrolled and later for the Great Books Program and Tryon Creek State Park.
After Sue and Art moved to Washington in 1990, she volunteered at Maryhill Museum and enjoyed hiking with friends from several groups.
Sue kept a dignified loveliness and this quality endeared her to many caregivers over the years as dementia progressed.
Sue is survived by Art, her husband of 68 years; her sister Joan LeBuhn of Glenview, Ill.; children Joan, Carol, Michael, Richard, and Susan and their spouses; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her brother; a sister; and a granddaughter.
A celebration of Sue’s life will be held in late spring at Stevens Meadows, an open space in Lake Oswego motivated by her love of the outdoors and wish that children would “always have a spot to fly a kite.”
Art Stevens, together with the entire Stevens family, is grateful to the staff and volunteers at Providence Brookside in Hood River, to Sue’s caregivers, and to Providence Hospice of the Gorge.
Disposition by cremation and private ceremony.
