Ron was born in The Dalles, Ore., son of Wayne and Ethelene Froebe. He died at Portland’s Providence Medical Center three days after suffering a massive stroke. Ron graduated from The Dalles High School in 1955, and from Oregon State University in 1959. He retired from the State of Oregon Right of Way Division.
At the time of his death, Ron and his wife Luvern were living in “the house that Ron built” in the Laurelhurst area of Portland, Ore. Ron said his proudest achievement was building the house all by himself, after taking college courses on how to build one. He began construction in 1974, working in the evenings and on weekends; they were able to move in 13 years later.
Ron is probably best known, at least in The Dalles area, for reporting, and photographing, a UFO at the Froebe farm on Chenowith Road. The photo was published in the Sept. 27, 1980, issue of the The Dalles Weekly Reminder under the banner headline “Man photographs UFO west of The Dalles.” The accompanying article said the photo revealed “ a two-toned object shaped like two salad bowls put upside down against each other.” It was subsequently revealed that it was exactly that-two plastic bowls glued together, hanging by a wire from a 2x4.
Ron’s hobbies included; creating and maintaining www.ronfroebe.mysite.com, a website with pictures and information about himself and his high school class. He volunteered for many years at Hollywood Senior Center, then at Holladay Park Plaza, helping seniors unravel the mysteries of the computer.
Ron is survived by his wife, Luvern; his brother, Jerry, and five nieces and nephews. Another brother, Ed, died in 2010.
