Funeral homes often submit obituaries as a service to the families they are assisting. However, we will be happy to accept obituaries from family members pending proper verification of the death.
Robert Lage Dickey (Bob) at the age of 85 passed away in Hood River, Ore., on Oct. 22, 2014, with his family by his side. Bob was born in White Salmon on March 14, 1929 to Ruth Laura (Henderson) and John William Dickey.
Bob’s mother’s family, the Warners and the Hendersons, were one of the pioneers of the Bingen area, coming to this area in 1867 and homesteading here, which eventually became part of the land today known as Dickey Farms.
Bob married Loretta Kock on Sept. 3, 1950, in Willard. They had three children and always made their home in the Bingen area. Loretta preceded him in death June 19, 1997, after a long illness. He later married Elsie Louise Yarnell on Oct. 11, 2005. They lived in Bingen until Oct. 26, 2013, when they moved to Parkhurst Assisted Living in Hood River, Ore., where Bob passed away.
Bob was a member of the Masons and Royal Arch, Mt. Adams Elks Lodge, Rotary International and Bethel Congregational Church which his great grandfather was one of the founders of. He served as a board of directors for Klickitat Valley Bank until his retirement.
Bob graduated in 1947 from Columbia High School; he was student body president that year. He attended Washington State University for one year before he came back to become a lifelong farmer on the family farm. It was truly a joy of farming where he got his strength. His pride of watching a crop be planted, grow and be harvested gave him such fulfillment.
He looked forward every year at the end of the season to go on their annual hunting vacation in Trout Lake. Many memories were made with his family and friends during those times, some were successful hunts and sometimes not, but still a wonderful time. He loved to fish just as much when he could get away.
In later years he would take many trips to the woods to pick huckleberries in the late summer, and to see the fall leaves later.
Bob is survived by his wife Elsie; son Stanley Dickey (Sandi) of Bingen; daughters Janice Leis (Dave) of Bingen, Laurie Walker (Steve) of Northwestern Lake; stepdaughter Joy Yarnell-Brayton (Hal) of Lebanon, Ore. He had five grandchildren, seven great grandchildren and one on the way. He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Ruth, brothers James and Donald Dickey, and his first wife Loretta. He will be truly missed by all.
A memorial service was held at Bethel Congregational Church in White Salmon on Wednesday, Oct. 29, 2014. Gardner Funeral Home handled arrangements.
Donations can be made to Heart of Hospice, 2621 Wasco St., Hood River, Oregon 97031.
