Ramona M. “Sugar” Lauterbach passed away at the age of 76 in her home surrounded by her family and loved ones on Sunday, May 19, 2018.
Sugar was born to her father, Warren, and mother, Almeta Rowland, on Feb. 7, 1942. Sugar went on to marry her husband William Lauterbach Jr. in 1959 and settled in Trout Lake Valley where they raised their four children. William and Sugar worked the farm in Trout Lake raising crops and cattle.
From 1978- 1981, Sugar ran the local Café in Trout Lake and in 1987 she and William moved to Castle Rock, where they continued to raise Brahman cattle while also owning and operating the Kelso AM/PM for 18 years.
In 2005, after her retirement, William passed away. Sugar decided to move back to Lyle, where she had originally grown up. Here she spent the remainder of her days and eventually went on to meet Jack Bryan, where they spent time enjoying her birds, turkeys, deer, fruit trees and tending their yards.
She is survived by her sister Carolyn, a brother Tony, her children, Raelene Steinbach of Glenwood, Faye Wend of Castle Rock, Annie Lauterbach of Longview, and Billy Lauterbach III of Longview, nine grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Sugar will be remembered for her sassy personality and her love for family and friends. She found happiness and fulfillment in helping others and nothing was more important than being there for her family and friends when they needed her most. Some of her fondest memories were driving cattle from Trout Lake Valley to the Columbia River Gorge.
A celebration of Sugar’s life is planned for 2 p.m., on July 15, 2018, at the Grange Hall in Trout Lake. A potluck will follow the celebration. If time allows, please bring a favorite dish to share.
Remembrances may be made to the Hearts for Hospice Care Center at 2621 Wasco St. in Hood River, Ore.
