Osa Anna Drew, known to everyone as Annie, passed away in Hood River on Jan. 9, 2018, at the age of 81. She was born to Mattie (Miles) and Merritt Joseph McDonald in Boise, Idaho, on Aug. 31, 1936.
In her early days, Annie was a wrestler, unusual for a woman at the time. She moved to Cascade Locks in 1963, where she was the first woman to pull green chain at the Cascade Locks Mill. Annie drove school bus for the school district, worked for contractors in Oregon and Washington and was involved in the labor unions. She was involved in the Lions Club and the Fraternal Order of Eagles.
The “community baker,” Annie loved baking cinnamon rolls, which she handed out to the kids on her school bus, and applesauce cakes that she distributed to children and adults around Christmastime. She also enjoyed the outdoors, gardening and traveling.
Most of all, Annie loved people. She was constantly helping people in need and never knew a stranger.
She will be missed by her daughter and son-in-law, Debbie and Bill Clark, and daughter Wanda Bryan-Bennett of Cascade Locks; sister Elda Mae Buchanan of Meridian, Idaho; stepdaughters Debby Bishop of Mountlake Terrace, Wash., Diane Mount, Kathy and Bob Tittle of Cascade Locks and Linda Bies of Vancouver, Wash.; stepbrother Randy Drew of Portland; 16 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews who dearly loved their “Aunt Annie.”
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; brothers Wesley and Merit McDonald; sister Wanda Geer; brother-in-law Eldon Buchanan; son-in-law Jim Bennett; and grandson Tyler Bies.
