Walter R. Uhrich, at age 85, went to his forever home peacefully with his loved ones by his side at his home in Vancouver, Wash., on Oct. 11, 2023. His long progression of Alzheimer’s finally ended with a pulmonary embolism.
Walter was born in Oakley, Kan., on Nov. 21, 1937, to Fred and Marie (Grauberger) Uhrich and grew up on a farm with his family that included eight siblings. George Uhrich, Bertha (Uhrich) DeLong, Edna (Uhrich) Rudell, Frances (Uhrich) McIntyre, Ralph Uhrich and his parents preceded him in death. His son Stephen Walter Uhrich also preceded him to his forever home.
He is survived by the love of his life, Janice (Frey) Uhrich, and his three daughters, Cheryl Sunderland of Richland, Wash., Jodi Lietz of Vancouver, Wash., and Cindy Uhrich of Toledo, Ore.; three siblings, Elsie (Uhrich) Keller, Colby, Kan., Carl Uhrich, Oakley, Kan., and Helen (Uhrich) Adair, Lincoln, Neb.; and eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren, with one more on the way.
Walter worked as an electrician, being the foreman on many large projects in the area, including Bonneville Dam’s second powerhouse, US Bank Tower and St. Vincent hospital in Portland, Ore. He also volunteered at a Young Life Camp, Churches and other community projects.
There will be a celebration of life service on Saturday, Nov. 4 at 11a.m. at the Christian Missionary Alliance Church, Hood River. Gardner Funeral Home is assisting. If you wish instead of flowers, you can make a donation to the Alzheimer’s Association or Young Life of the Gorge.
