Funeral homes often submit obituaries as a service to the families they are assisting. However, we will be happy to accept obituaries from family members pending proper verification of the death.
Timothy Shane O’Neill passed away peacefully at his home on Nov. 17, 2023, in The Dalles, Ore., at the age of 69. He was preceded in death by his parents, Russell H. O’Neill and Catherine Buese O’Neill, and his brother Dennis James O’Neill. He is survived by the love of his life, his wife, Lowry Anne Browning, Brendan O'Neill, his son (Arielle) and daughter, Molly Mae Smith (Shane) and siblings Nancy Pellecchia (Joe), Tom O’Neill (Marti), Sue Godfrey (Tom) and Pat O’Neill (Jenny).
Born on April 26, 1954, in Stamford, Conn., Tim grew up in Louisville, Ky. An alumnus of St. Xavier High School, he attended the University of Kentucky, where he graduated with distinction in 1975 and was a member of the Phi Beta Kappa honor society. He was a 1978 graduate of the University of Kentucky College of Law. An excellent writer, Tim was a staff member of the Kentucky Law Journal, which published several of his articles. Following a two-year clerkship with the Honorable James Fleming Gordon, senior judge of the Western District of Kentucky, he continued his studies at Tulane University and graduated in 1981 with an LL.M. in Admiralty law, with distinction.
His Admiralty specialty led him to practice law in Louisiana and Washington State. Following his years in private practice, he turned to public service. From 1999 to 2010, he served as county prosecuting attorney and coroner for Klickitat County, Wash. Tim retired from the practice of law and moved with his loving wife Lowry to The Dalles.
To know Tim was to love him. He had the gift of making people feel good about themselves. A bear hug from Tim left no doubt that he truly cared about you. He had a great sense of humor and a quick wit. He possessed a wealth of historical knowledge and arcane trivia, both of which found their way into many conversations. He enjoyed a good cigar, often while walking the “wee Scotties.” Most importantly, he was kind. We wish everyone could have a Tim in their lives. He was a good man.
The family would like to thank his caregivers and good friends for their support and compassion.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be made to Providence Hospice of the Gorge, c/o Providence Hood River Foundation, PO Box 149, Hood River, OR 97031 or call 541-387-6242.
