Sue Jensen
Emma “Sue” Jensen, 83, died peacefully at her home in Hood River on Aug. 22, 2012, with loved ones by her side. Sue was born on Feb. 7, 1929, in Seattle, Wash., to Henry Grady Samuel and Alice Merele Stewart Samuel; she was the fourth of six children.
Sue grew up in the Seattle area and spent many summers at Star Lake. She graduated from West Seattle High School in 1947 and went directly to Washington State University where she met Floyd Engler.
They married in 1948 and during the 20 years they were together they had three children. In 1969 they divorced and went their separate ways.
On July 1, 1970, Sue married Dave Jensen and she and daughter Judy moved to Hood River where two families were merged into one!
Sue loved to travel and she and Dave traveled to many places around the world. Some of her favorite places were touring the orient with the Sister City Tsuruta group, cruising through the Great Lakes down the S1, Lawrence River, Europe, and a trip on the QE2.
Sue loved music! She played the piano and violin, and sang with the Sweet Adelines chorus for six years. She went to many Broadway musicals, took tap lessons when she was 50, and encouraged all of her children to enjoy music.
Sue also devoted much of her time to the Columbia Rehabilitation Center where she volunteered helping with the public relations committee.
She had many interests throughout her lifetime. She was an avid reader, did needlepoint, went to sewing club, collected dolls and she made many cross-stitch quilts.
Sue loved to play cards and NEVER missed an opportunity to play with family and friends. She also loved the beach and always had a crossword puzzle going.
Sue and Dave wintered in Lake Havasu City, Ariz., for 13 years and enjoyed many activities along with having very special friends there.
She enjoyed spending time with family and friends and has a great-granddaughter named after her. She has a large and loving family and is survived by her husband of 42 years, Dave; daughters Judy, Bonnie, Patti and Julie and sons Wes, Dick and Kevin and their families, 15 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by daughter Jan Engler.
A celebration of her life will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 22, at Anderson’s Tribute Center, 1401 Belmont Ave., Hood River.
Memorials are encouraged by the family in Sue’s name to Providence Hospice of the Gorge.
