Sheldon Dexter, 63, of Parkdale, Ore., passed away Aug. 8, 2011, with family by his side at the Veterans Medical Center of Portland. Sheldon was born Feb. 17, 1948, in Gays Mills, Wis., to Clifford and Maxine (Parker) Dexter.
Services are planned for 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 20, at Parkdale Elementary School, 4880 Van Nuys Drive. Viewing is scheduled for Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Anderson's Tribute Center, 1401 Belmont Ave., Hood River.
Sheldon moved to Parkdale with his family when he was 17, joined the Army at 19 and served one year in Vietnam; 1968-69, earning the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, two Bronze Stars, Vietnam Campaign Medal and Army Commendation Medal.
He married Carolyn DeHart July 14, 1969, and they raised four children during the 25 years they were married. In 1973 they purchased their home in Parkdale where he has lived since.
Sheldon enjoyed camping, hunting, fishing and spending time with friends and family. He was a wonderful father, brother, grandpa, uncle and friend. He will be missed by many.
He worked as a mechanic most of his life, and loved the challenge of finding the problem and fixing it. He also enjoyed collecting old cars and pickups including his 1954 Chrysler, which the family will be driving and inviting others to drive their classic cars in the procession from the service to the cemetery on Saturday.
Sheldon is survived by his children, Tonia Carter and Chad Dexter; mother of his children and wife of 25 years, Carolyn Duffy; grandchildren Desiree Dexter, Jake Dexter, Shelby Carter and Brice Carter; brothers David Dexter and Tim Dexter; and sisters Sharon Drinkwine, Karen Wilson, Jeanie Dexter-Krieger, Sarah Dexter, Rita Hendershot, Jane Mauzey and Ruth Smith.
He was preceded in death by his twin sister, Shelby Dexter, parents Clifford and Maxine, brothers Darrell and Danny, daughter Tammy Dexter and son Ron Dexter (earlier this year).
Memorial contributions for family can be made in Sheldon's name at the Hood River Bank of America or sent care of Anderson's.
