Ruth Akiyama went to be with the Lord on Dec. 26, 2024. She passed away at Providence Brookside Manor in Hood River, Oregon. Ruth was born April 20, 1927, one of five children born to Chiho and Matsuyo Tomita.
She grew up on a farm in Odell, Oregon, and after graduating from St. Catherine University Nursing School in St. Paul, Minnesota, came back to Portland, Oregon, and then Hood River. Ruth worked as a registered nurse at the Hood River hospital for many decades.
Ruth is survived by her two sons, Gary Akiyama and his wife Anne of Vancouver, Washington, and Wesley Akiyama of Yakima, Washington; brother Lewis Tomita and his wife Jean of Portland; grandchildren Kimberly, Amy, David, and Katy; and four great-grandchildren, Eden, Titus, Willa, and George, along with various nieces and nephews.
Services for Ruth are as follows:
Viewing and visitation, 5-7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 17 at Anderson's Tribute Center; and memorial service and reception, 11:30 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 18 at Anderson's Tribute Center. Ruth’s service will be shared via livestream at www.AndersonsTributeCenter.com.
A private vault committal will be held at Idelewilde Cemetery, Hood River, where she will be laid to rest beside her husband, George.
Memorials are encouraged to be made to either Spirit of Grace Church or Brookside Manor in Ruth’s name and can be sent in care of Anderson’s Tribute Center or given to Koden bearers at Ruth’s service. Visit www.AndersonsTributeCenter.com to leave a note of condolence for the family.
