The National Forest in the great beyond gained a hiker, nature lover, photographer, and friend. Paul Daniel Halliday, 69, a long-time resident of The Dalles, Ore., passed away on Dec. 18, 2023. Paul was a devotee of the outdoors, a passionate land advocate, and a devoted friend to those in his inner circle. Paul was kind-hearted, had a heart of gold, and a great appreciation of the serene beauty found in the outdoors. The unintended consequences of dementia took Paul from us too soon.
Paul was the first of three children born in to Joseph and Lorna Halliday. He was born on June 28, 1954, in Portland, Ore.
He settled with his family in The Dalles in 1960, graduating from The Dalles High School in 1972. He worked with summer fire crews for the Oregon Department of Forestry (ODF). He spent a series of winters grooming trails at Mt. Bachelor in Bend, Ore. Paul returned full-time to The Dalles, taking on the role of Forestry Officer with the ODF, completing his associate degree in forest management in 1987, at Central Oregon Community College. Paul retired from ODF in January 2010, following 28 years of service.
Having retired at the young age of 56, Paul spent the ensuing years hiking, biking, camping, and volunteering. He spent time grooming trails as well as helping to set and monitor motion-sensor cameras to capture wildlife activity in the Mt. Hood National Forest. He spent time photographing wildlife and nature, including time spent studying and photographing the wolf habitat of the Northwest. When at home, Paul spent time volunteering with Home At Last, walking numerous dogs for the local Humane Society; for Mid-Columbia Fire & Rescue as a volunteer fireman and photographer; and for The Dalles Parks and Recreation Department. In his last years, Paul took great pride in his home environment. Summer was spent maintaining an immaculate yard and providing homes for the local birds. Winter was spent feeding the local birds — and a few resident squirrels — one of the best diets ever.
Survivors include his siblings, Michael Halliday and his wife Cheryl of Wilsonville, Ore., and Susan Halliday of Corvallis, Ore.; and an aunt, uncle, and numerous cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, his nephew, Curtis Halliday, and his loyal dog, Slick.
We imagine Paul and his dog, Slick, hiking in the great outdoors. Of course, Paul has his camera slung over his shoulder. He is free to pursue the next grand adventure — as in Narnia, “going further up and further in.”
