Michael “Syro” Syrovatka, renowned ski coach and mentor, dies at 70
Mike Syrovatka, a highly respected international alpine ski coach and mentor, passed away on July 2, 2025, while windsurfing on the Columbia River Gorge in Washington. Born in Prague, Czech Republic, Mike immigrated to Montreal, Quebec, in 1968.
A graduate of the Université de Grenoble’s ski industry program and holder of Canada’s highest Level IV coaching certification, Mike devoted more than 40 years to coaching and developing elite ski racers in Canada and the U.S.
He began his coaching career at Bromont Ski Academy, went on to lead Quebec’s Provincial Team, guiding five of eight athletes to the Canadian National Team. As head coach of the Canadian Alpine Ski Team, he played a pivotal role in restoring Canada’s presence on the world stage, coaching athletes to World Junior medals, NorAm titles, and World Cup points. His later work included extended roles at Gould Academy, Jackson Hole Ski & Snowboard Club, and Mount Hood summer ski camps.
Mike was admired for his technical expertise, and for his humility, wisdom, and unwavering dedication to the joy and artistry of sport. He shared a deep bond with his son, Mark, and built a meaningful life with his wife, Pam, in the Columbia River Gorge.
He is survived by his wife Pam (Hickey) Barlow; son Mark Syrovatka (Geordie); stepson Will Barlow; stepdaughter Hailey Barlow; and brother George Syrovatka (Leslie).
He died doing what he loved, in a place he loved. He will be deeply missed.
