Lola Medres was 79 years old when she passed away at The Dalles Health and Rehabilitation Center in The Dalles, Ore., on April 21, 2012. Her family was with her and the Heart of Hospice was caring for her.
Lola was born on Aug. 6, 1932, in Popular Bluff, Mo., the youngest child to Sarah Lakota and John Medres. Her siblings were Ruth and Andrew. Around 1946, her family moved to Washington.
In 1969, Lola worked at W.K.O. on the green chain. In October 1986 she started emergency medical technician classes, passing her EMT test in March 1987. Lola worked for the Skamania County Ambulance Service for five years, and was given recognition of her outstanding service in 1991.
She also drove school bus for the Stevenson-Carson School District. Then in 1992, she studied and received her GED. As she was working on her GED through Employment Security in Stevenson, Wash., she worked at the Wind River Middle School office.
Lola was a member of the Eagles of Stevenson, Washington and the American Legion in Carson, Wash.
In 1953, Lola moved to the Stevenson area, then moved to Carson in 1959. She continued to live in the Carson area until 2007, when she went into assisted living in Hood River.
Lola is survived by her children, Steve Kellie, of Carson, John Kellie, of Wasilla, Alaska, Mary Kellie, of Carson, and Susan Gross, of Underwood, Wash.; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Her brother, Andrew Medres, and her sister, Ruth Wittler, preceded Lola in death. Lola was raised by her single mother and older siblings when Lola’s father, John Medres, died when she was 9 years old.
