Funeral homes often submit obituaries as a service to the families they are assisting. However, we will be happy to accept obituaries from family members pending proper verification of the death.
Lawrence “Dan” Gibson, 73, of Prineville, Oregon, passed away on Feb. 7, 2026. Born Sept. 12, 1952, in Oregon City to Harry and Elnora (Branstuder) Gibson, Dan graduated from Gladstone High School in 1972, where he excelled as an athlete. In wrestling, he earned Most Valuable Player honors in 1970 and 1971. As a dominant offensive and defensive tackle, he received all league honors, first team All State recognition, and was named Best Lineman. His teammates proudly called him “Dan the Man.”
Dan began his career in public service as a police officer with the Gladstone Police Department before spending 30 years with the Oregon Department of Transportation in highway maintenance, retiring in 2003 at Cascade Locks. Hard work, integrity, and quiet strength defined his life.
In retirement, Dan found joy working on a ranch in Prineville. He branded cattle, mended fences, and impressed ranch owners with his determination and resilience. He truly had a cowboy’s heart.
In 2012, he married Susan Hopkins Gibson. Dan loved hunting, fishing, camping, NASCAR, and cheering for the Seattle Seahawks. He rarely missed a race by his favorite driver, Kyle Larson.
Above all, Dan loved his family. He stayed closely connected with his daughters through calls filled with stories, laughter, and his legendary dad jokes. A gifted storyteller, he could light up any room.
Dan is survived by his wife, Sue; daughters, Dawn McKim, and Angela LaMarr; and grandchildren, AJ and Taylor. He was preceded in death by his spouse, Deann; his parents; and two sisters.
A celebration of life will be held this summer.
